Livingston plays host to Sikh fete

Livingston will hold one of the most colorful parades of the year today, when the Sikh community gathers for its annual Hola Mahala festival. Organizers expect about 3,000 participants from all over the valley. The parade will start at noon at the Sikh Temple, 2765 Peach Ave. Marchers will travel from the Peach Avenue temple to Guru Nank Temple on B Street and back. There will be music, floats, free food and drinks provided to the participants and spectators. Hola Mahala translates to "mock fight" in English. It is held on the first day of the lunar month of Chet, which usually falls in March. In India, the parade features swordsmen on horseback performing mock battles to demonstrate martial-arts skills.
