More than $211 million in Stanislaus County property taxes are due this week.
The payment deadline usually is April 10. But because that falls on a Saturday this year, property owners will be allowed to pay as late as Monday.
"If they want to mail the payment, taxpayers are requested to go to the post office counter in person and request a postmark (be made in their presence)," suggested Jegan Raja, assistant treasurer-tax collector. "If (payments are) postmarked on or after April 13, excuses such as 'I dropped it off at the post office on time on April 12' would not be accepted as timely payment."
The tax collector's Modesto office, in Suite 2500 at 1010 Tenth St., is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays to accept payments made in person.

Taxpayers can charge their taxes to Visa or MasterCard credit cards or have them deducted from their bank accounts using debit cards, but there is a fee for doing so. To use such cards, call 866-276-8196 and pay before Monday.
"The county wants every taxpayer to pay the taxes on time without penalties," Raja said. Those who don't will face substantial fees and interest charges.
