Modesto center prepares for Juneteenth

The King-Kennedy Memorial Center and the city of Modesto are looking for performers and vendors to participate in the 40th annual Juneteenth Celebration.

The holiday marks the date that news of slavery's abolition reached Galveston, Texas, in June 1865, two months after Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to U.S. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in Virginia.

Modesto's Juneteenth activities include a youth talent show June 18 and an outdoor celebration June 19 at Mellis Park, 601 S. Martin Luther King Drive.

Talent show auditions will take place June 3 and June 10.
