A Livingston man was arrested early this morning on suspicion of drunk driving after he veered his car into the path of a tractor trailer in Merced County, authorities said.
The driver, Edgar G. Haro, 21, of Livingston, suffered minor injuries from the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. His passenger, Jose Atienzo-Quezada, suffered major injuries.Both were hospitalized.
The truck driver, Francisco Chavez, 35, of Delhi, was not injured.
According to CHP officer Noe Lomeli, Haro was driving his 1996 Toyota Corolla southbound on Highway 165 just north of August Avenue at a high rate of speed. Chavez was driving northbound.

When Haro got to the Highway 165-August Avenue intersection, he turned his car left and collided with the truck, which was traveling at approximately 40 mph, Lomeli said.
Atienzo-Quezada was taken to Modesto’s Doctors Medical Center. Haro was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, taken to Turlock’s Emanuel Medical Center for treatment to his injuries and later booked into Merced County Jail.
