Officers arrested a Livingston man suspected of driving under the influence after he turned his car into the path of a big rig on Highway 165 in Merced County, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The driver, Edgar Haro, 21, suffered minor injuries in the collision, according to the CHP. His passenger, Jose Atienzo-Quezada, suffered major injuries. Both were hospitalized. The big- rig driver, Francisco Chavez, 35, of Delhi was not injured.
The CHP said Haro was driving a 1996 Toyota Corolla at a high rate of speed south on Highway 165 just north of August Avenue. The big rig was heading north on the highway.
When Haro got to the intersection with August Avenue, he turned his car left and collided with the big rig, which was traveling about 40 mph, the CHP said.

Atienzo-Quezada was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
Haro was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, taken to Turlock's Emanuel Medical Center for treatment and later booked at Merced County Jail.
