Police identify Modesto crash victim

Police on Tuesday released the name of a 12-year-old boy who died after a traffic accident Monday afternoon on West Orangeburg Avenue in Modesto.

Amari Karriem, 12, of Modesto died in the crash, according to Sgt. Rick Armendariz, a Modesto police spokesman. Amari was a sixth-grader at Franklin Elementary School in Modesto.

He was riding in a BMW with a member of his extended family when the crash occurred in the 1900 block of West Orangeburg, near the Motel 6 and just east of Highway 99.

Authorities said it appeared the BMW spun out of control and was broadsided by an oncoming pickup hauling a trailer. The pickup driver was not injured.

The woman driving the BMW and a younger child suffered minor injuries and were taken to a Modesto hospital before they were released.
