Kevin Vigil was the man who died Thursday morning after the car in which he was riding collided with an oncoming pickup on Highway 108 just east of Lancaster Road, according to Stanislaus County coroner officials.
Vigil, 45, was from Moccasin in Tuolumne County.
The crash occurred about 6:10 a.m. as Vigil rode in the front passenger seat of a 1988 Honda Accord driven by Joseph G. Lopez, 27, of Copperopolis, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The Honda was heading west on the highway as a 2001 Chevrolet pickup was heading in the opposite direction.
The CHP said the pickup's driver, Jason W. Wood, 30, of Sonora fell asleep and the vehicle veered into the oncoming lane, colliding with the Honda.
Lopez suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Modesto's Memorial Medical Center. Wood was not injured.
Alcohol and drugs were not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
