Women's group to hold first conference

The Women's Empowerment Group has an all-star lineup of accomplished women set to speak Friday at its first conference.

The topics of the conference at Modesto's DoubleTree Hotel are women's health, financial management, life experiences, women's resources, women in leadership, and career and family balance.

The scheduled speakers include Gallo Center for the Arts Chief Executive Officer Lynn Dickerson; state Assemblywoman Anna Caballero, D-Salinas; Stanislaus County District Attorney Birgit Fladager; and Riverbank Mayor Virginia Madueño.

Organizers hope this is the largest gathering of women in the area.

The group began in February 2007 as a networking effort for professional women. According to its Web site, the group's focus is to offer support to displaced women and children in the community. Organizers hope to use Friday's conference as an opportunity to raise awareness about unmet social needs.

Tickets are $25 and include lunch and a fashion show. There will be some breaks between speakers for networking.
