A Modesto man was killed when he was struck by a train in Salida early Sunday evening.
The Salida Fire District received a call at about 6:30 p.m., and found the victim dead just south of the Murphy Road/North Dakota Avenue and Salida Avenue crossing, according to Chief Dale Skiles.
The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as William Hamilton, 26.
Lt. Mario Cisneros of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said the train was heading southbound at about 40 mph when the conductor reported seeing the man trying to run across the tracks.
The conductor attempted to stop, but could not because of the weight of the train.
Cisneros said it was not "evident that it was an attempted suicide."
