Two Modesto elementary school students were among 60 of the state's top spellers who met Saturday in the California State Elementary Spelling Championship in Sonoma.
Lakewood Elementary sixth-grader Mahima Krishnamoorthi, 11, came in 20th, and Bowoo Lee, 10, a fifth-grader at Sonoma Elementary School, finished 53rd.
The competition was completed in eight rounds. Santa Cruz County's Andrew Miller, 12, a sixth-grader, won by correctly spelling "sesquicentennial," then "gorgonize."
He received a trophy and a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond.
