Shooting leaves Modesto man, 32, critical

A 32-year-old man was shot and seriously injured Wednesday in the parking lot of a north Modesto apartment complex, and police were looking for two suspects involved in the shooting.

The injured Modesto man was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday evening, said Sgt. Rick Armendariz, a Modesto police spokesman.

Police did not release the man's name to protect his safety.

The shooting occurred shortly before noon at the Chateau Apartments in the 3000 block of Coffee Road, just north of Rumble Road.

Armendariz said there was a small group of people involved in a dispute in the parking lot. Detectives were trying to determine what the dispute was about.

"People heard yelling and screaming, and then they heard the shots fired," Armendariz said.

Police responded to a report of the shooting at the apartment complex and found the injured man in the parking lot. Armendariz said the man suffered at least one gunshot wound.

No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified. Witnesses told police the two male suspects fled in a vehicle east on Rumble Road.

Armendariz said investigators did not know whether the shooting was gang-related.

He said it did not look like Wednesday's shooting was related to a Tuesday night shooting in west Modesto, where a man was killed.
