Ceremonies are planned around the Northern San Joaquin Valley and foothills this weekend. Here is a partial listing:
MODESTO: Modesto Christian School, 5755 Sisk Road, 10:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flag ceremony for fallen soldiers. Afternoon events will include gun salute, honor guard and appreciation for public safety. Members of Army Lt. Daniel Hyde's family will speak. Hyde was killed in Iraq. Ongoing "Freedom Isn't Free" military memorial display. 402-6991.
MANTECA: Community event at Woodward Park, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Memorial service at 10 a.m.; concessions, car show, petting zoo and USO show from 11:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m. Ceremony at 5:30, fireworks at 8:15 p.m.
SANTA NELLA: San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 W. McCabe Road. Event will start at 11 a.m. Guest speaker will be retired Maj. Gen. Paul Monroe. 854-1040, ext. 107.
MANTECA: Memorial Day ceremony at East Union Cemetery, 10 a.m. There will be a Memorial Day parade through downtown at 11:30 a.m., sponsored by the Manteca Chamber of Commerce. "Traveling Tribute" is open to the public for viewing at Woodward Park until sunset.
MODESTO: Seventh Street Bridge, 9 a.m. Flowers will be dropped into the Tuolumne River in memory of military personnel lost at sea. 529-8192.

HUGHSON: Lakewood Memorial Park, 900 Santa Fe Ave., 1 p.m. Speakers, laying of a wreath, songs, bagpiper. 664-1599.
TURLOCK: Turlock Memorial Park, Soderquist Road and West Main Avenue. Hilmar Community Band will play at 10 a.m. A ceremony will follow. 632-9111.
CERES: Ceres Cemetery, 1801 E. Whitmore Ave. Events: Avenue of Flags, keynote speaker Mayor Anthony Cannella, Sheriff Adam Christianson will read the Roll Call of the Fallen, and Steve Scott will pay a special tribute to Capt. Raymond Hill and Lance Cpl. Juana Navarro-Arellano, who were killed in Iraq.
NEWMAN: Hills Ferry Cemetery, Stuhr and Draper roads, west of Highway 33, 11 a.m. March to the flagpole, music, guest speaker, wreath laying. 854-3488.

COLUMBIA: The Columbia Dragoons re-enact historical events from Tuolumne Rangers, Civil War volunteers. A historical black powder salute presented by the Columbia Grenadine Belles and the Columbia Foot Dragoons. Columbia City Cemetery, Columbia. 10:45 a.m. 533-3663.
RIVERBANK: Dedication of a war memorial and placing of a plaque to honor Petty Officer 3rd Class James Layton. The Riverbank resident and Navy corpsman was killed in Afghanistan.
