Suspected Modesto prowler still hospitalized

A suspected prowler shot by an off-duty Modesto police officer remained in a Modesto area hospital Sunday.

Modesto police Lt. Chris Fuzie said the man will be in the hospital at least two or three more days.

Police anticipate arresting the 25-year-old suspect and are not releasing his name unless he is arrested.

The incident began in northeast Modesto about 11 p.m. Friday when a resident spotted a prowler in his back yard near his teenage daughter's window. Another family member called the off-duty officer, who lives nearby, as the father went to confront the prowler.

Police are not releasing the names of the off-duty officer and his neighbors to ensure their safety.
