Modesto man commits suicide at cemetery, police say

A Modesto man who may have been despondent over financial issues apparently fatally shot himself Sunday at a cemetery, police reported.

The 53-year-old man was wearing what appeared to be a German military uniform. Police said the man belonged to a World War II re-enactors group.

"Our preliminary information is that he had been despondent for quite a while," said Sgt. Rick Armendariz, a police spokesman. "He had made some prior comments to family members threatening suicide."

Police said families and others were at Modesto Citizens' Cemetery at 801 Scenic Drive when the shot was reported about 3:10 p.m.

It was initially reported that the suicide took place at Acacia Memorial Park, but police corrected that statement on Tuesday.

Armendariz said officers started first aid, but the man was pronounced dead at a Modesto hospital.

Armendariz said the man's family was looking for him, and family members arrived at the cemetery while officers were there.
