House burns in Newman, man's body discovered nearby

Police and fire officials are investigating a death of a man and a fire on his property.

At about 4 a.m. today, firefighters responded to a residential fire at Hallowell and Draper roads southwest of Newman, said Lt. Charles Grom of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff’s deputies showed up to help.

A body was found in an outbuilding or barn next to the main house, Grom said. The man, in his mid-50s, was dead from a gunshot wound to his upper body, possibly his head, Grom said. A rifle was found near the body.

Because detectives are still investigating, the man’s identity of the man has not been released. Suicide is suspected, but police are looking into all causes, Grom said.

No one else was on the large, rural property. However, some family members live in another house on the site, Grom said.
