A 68-year-old Tracy man was killed early Thursday morning near Patterson when his pickup, hauling more than two dozen beehives, overturned after crashing into a freeway guardrail and concrete barrier.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene about 3:15 a.m. CHP Officer Eric Parsons said officers identified the man from his driver's license, but were waiting to release his name until after the Stanislaus County coroner's office notified his relatives.
Parsons said the CHP is looking into the cause of the crash, including a possible medical reason that may have sent the pickup veering into the barrier.
The crash spilled at least 30 beehives onto northbound Interstate 5 just south of Sperry Road. Officers closed down the left lane for several hours to remove the beehives.
