Firefighters on Tuesday were battling a grass fire that had grown to 350 acres within a few hours.
The blaze was west of Interstate 5 near Orestimba Road and several miles west of Newman.
The fire was reported about 2:05 p.m., said Deputy Chief Steven Hall with the West Stanislaus County Fire Protection District in Patterson. At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, he said firefighters from several agencies were battling the grass fire and a strike team from Modesto area fire agencies was en route.
Hall said the fire had not threatened any structures. He did not know how close the fire was to the interstate. The California Highway Patrol in Modesto said it had not received any reports from I-5 motorists about smoke and flames from the fire.
