Modesto boutique delights in unique

Finding the perfect gift for friends with eclectic taste just got easier.

Intrinsic Elements gift boutique in downtown Modesto is stocked with an array of homeopathic products, costume jewelry, crystals and candles.

Co-owners Susie Fagundes and daughter- in-law Michelle VanArtsdalen opened the shop in April, culminating a more than decadelong dream to open a unique boutique in town. Fagundes had owned beauty salons in the area before, including Creations Hair Design. But she sold her businesses and took a few years off.

"Then I realized I needed to make my store happen that I'd been dreaming about for 15 years," Fagundes said. "About two years ago a friend said, 'I've been hearing about his store for so long, what have you done to make it happen?' "

Fagundes and VanArtsdalen, who started off dusting shelves in her mother-in-law's beauty salons in 1988, sell an eclectic mix of items, from locally made handbags to custom T-shirts. Clothing and costume jewelry bring the "bling," Fagundes said, which is balanced by holistic items such as bath salts, crystals, incense and essential oils.

"We're a great mix of gifts, so you should be able to find a gift for anyone here," she said.

Intrinsic Elements, 1214 J St., is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Pet Extreme in Turlock has added grooming to its repertoire.

Earlier this month the pet store opened its grooming facility in the back of its Turlock shop at 2840 Countryside Drive. The 600-square-foot, full-service grooming site offers everything from bathing to hair removal, ear cleaning, nail trimming, massages, teeth brushing, hair dying and Frontline treatments for dogs and cats.

"We had several requests for grooming," General Manager Joe Perkins said. "Now people come to get their food, supplies and drop off their dog to get them groomed. It's a one-stop shop."

To celebrate the new service, Pet Extreme will have a grand opening celebration starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. The event will include vendor information, groomer introductions, specials, and popcorn and balloons for kids.

The regular grooming hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 656-7085 or go to www.petextreme.com. ...
