Domestic squabble plays out in Sonora grocery store parking lot

Police broke up a fight between a husband and wife in a grocery store parking lot.

Officers were called to the Safeway parking lot about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators found that Jiawei Hu, 24, and his wife, Zhou Ping, 25, had gotten into an argument over food.

According to police, Ping started walking away from Hu, but Hu grabbed her and started pulling her toward their vehicle. Ping fell to the pavement and tried to get away from Hu. Hu then picked Ping up off of the ground and started carrying her towards their vehicle. As he was trying to stuff his wife into the vehicle, a bystander separated the two.

Hu was arrested without incident and booked into the Tuolumne County Jail on charges of felony attempted kidnapping and misdemeanor domestic battery.

The couple are Chinese citizens in the United States on work visas. They live in Sonora.
