Council member White in hospital

Riverbank Councilman Dave White underwent surgery Thursday after complaining of tightness in his chest.

White, 71, did not have a heart attack, according to city officials. He likely will be in the hospital for three or four days.

White complained of tightness in his chest while at the Nifty Drive-In on Atchinson Street shortly after 9 a.m. He was alert and conscious when an ambulance took him to a Modesto-area hospital, said Riverbank Police Chief Bill Pooley.

City officials said it is unlikely White will attend Monday's City Council meeting.

White is a fixture on the City Council, serving on it for 18 of the past 25 years. He was the city's first elected mayor. He and his wife founded a beauty supply business and at one time owned 30 stores in several states.

White and his grandson and fellow council member, Jesse James White, have been lightning rods recently. They have verbally sparred with city officials, questioned city spending and blocked attempts to raise sewer rates.

The two were the targets of an unsuccessful recall campaign last year.
