United Way collecting indispensable staple

The United Way of Stanislaus is on a roll this year as it collects toilet paper for its 26 partner agencies, from The Salvation Army and Haven Women's Shelter to Inter-Faith Ministries.

"Nonprofits spend thousands of dollars on toilet paper each year ... dollars that could be going to vitally important services they provide to our community," reads a United Way flier.

Last year, the United Way collected more than 600 rolls. This year it hopes to collect 5,000 rolls.

The public can help by dropping off toilet paper Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 at the United Way, 422 McHenry Ave., Modesto.
