Juneteenth events set this weekend in Modesto

Modesto is putting the finishing touches on a series of events to celebrate Juneteenth, the holiday that remembers the summer day in 1865 when the last slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned that they were free — two months after the South surrendered and ended the Civil War.

A youth talent show kicks off the weekend from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the King-Kennedy Memorial Center, 601 S. Martin Luther King Drive.

An outdoor celebration in neighboring Mellis Park follows on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It's expected to feature gospel and jazz musicians, as well as a basketball tournament.
