Former Stanislaus County chief prosecutor John Goold has been promoted to the same post at the Merced County district attorney's office, less than a year since Goold made the move to Merced.
Goold joined the Merced office in September after a two-year stint in the Napa County district attorney's office.
He served as the chief prosecutor in Modesto from 1999 to 2007, acting as spokesman during the Scott Peterson murder trial, which drew attention from media outlets around the world.
Merced County District Attorney Larry D. Morse II on Tuesday announced Goold's promotion. He succeeds Mark Bacciarini, who recently was appointed by Gov. Schwarzenegger to a judgeship in the Merced County Superior Court.
A prosecutor for 17 years, Goold earned his bachelor's degree in political science/public administration from San Jose State University while working as a police officer in the Bay Area.
He graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1990 and worked in civil law before being hired by the Stanislaus County district attorney's office in 1993.
