A Groveland woman, 59, died after her car plunged down an embankment into a rock retaining wall, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The woman, whose name was not released pending notification of kin, was driving eastbound on Upper Skyridge Drive east of Lower Skyridge Drive in Groveland on Saturday around 1:45 p.m. Her Ford Escape drifted too far right after a curve and went off the roadway, the CHP said in a release Monday.
Though the air bags deployed, she was thrown into the windshield. Had she been wearing a seat belt, the CHP said, she would likely have suffered only minor injuries.
A passing motorist saw the car two and a half hours later and called in emergency crews. The woman was declared dead at the scene.
