Auto theft task force officers used a Taser to subdue a man this morning near Scenic Drive after he allegedly took stereo equipment from a stolen Mercedes-Benz and then tried to flee in a stolen van, authorities said.
Casey Kerns, 27, was taken into custody on Brighton Avenue following a short foot chase after he bailed out of the van, according to Lt. Clint Raymer of the Modesto Police Department.
The incident began at about 7:15 a.m. Officers with the Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force set up surveillance of the Mercedes. Reported stolen several days ago, the Mercedes was parked in the 1700 block of Scenic Drive, just west of Rose Avenue, Raymer said.
Kerns, a parolee, drove up in the van and parked. He got out, removed two speakers from the Mercedes’ trunk and placed them in the van.
When officers approached Kerns, he sped off in the van. He turned onto Brighton Avenue, parked the van and took off on foot. Kerns was apprehended after a short chase, Raymer said. The Taser was used to subdue him.
StanCATT officers later discovered that the van was stolen Wednesday night.
Kerns was arrested for investigation of auto theft, burglary and a parole violation, Raymer said.
