The man pulled from a Modesto canal Wednesday night by firefighters drowned, authorities said this morning.
Darrell Moon, 51, a transient from the Modesto area, was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office this morning as the man who jumped into the canal along Briggsmore Avenue near Carver Road after the woman he was with fell in.
He rescued her, but could not save himself, according to Lt. Clint Raymer of the Modesto Police Department.
Raymer said preliminary reports show that the two may have been intoxicated at the time she fell in.
Shortly before 8 p.m., Modesto police officers and firefighters responded to a report that a man had fallen into the canal.
A few minutes later, firefighters found Moon in the canal just west of Carver, said Modesto fire Battalion Chief Hugo Patino.
He said Moon was not conscious when he was pulled out of the water.
Firefighters began lifesaving procedures before the man was taken by ambulance to a Modesto hospital.
Patino said Wednesday night the woman who called to report that her friend was in the canal appeared to have been drinking and remained at the scene speaking to police.
