Consumer complaints against defunct Aqua Pool & Spa doubled Wednesday after state investigators asked to hear from customers with unfinished pools.
The Contractors State License Board's 23 complaints on Tuesday grew to 46 on Wednesday after media reports in response to the agency's news release.
Aqua owner Richard Townsend last week told a TV station that 50 to 60 families were left with partly built pools when the Manteca company, which started 22 years ago in Modesto, went out of business.
The regulatory agency is working with the California Spa and Pool Industry Education Council to recruit other contractors to finish jobs, but Aqua reportedly is pursuing plans to help customers as well.
Rick Lopes, spokesman for the Contractors State License Board and a Modesto native, said people can write a letter to Aqua indicating a desire to hire another company if Aqua doesn't respond within 72 hours.
"That has worked in the past" to void contracts, Lopes said Wednesday.
