A 24-year-old Turlock man died early Monday morning when he drove his car into an irrigation canal southwest of Newman, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Alonzo Ibarra was returning from Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, where his friend and front-seat passenger, Roberto Haro, had just been treated for a sports-related injury, CHP officer Eric Parsons said.
Ibarra was driving about 80 mph west on Hallowell Road and approaching a T-intersection where Hallowell dead-ends into Draper Road, the CHP reported.
It was shortly after midnight when the car went through the intersection, hit an embankment and flipped, coming to rest on its roof in a canal. The 32-foot wide canal had about 5 feet of water in it, according to Parsons.
Haro, 25, of Newman, was able to free himself and escape through the shattered front windshield, but he was unsuccessful in his attempts to pull his friend from the car.
Ibarra was pronounced dead at the scene. Haro was taken back to Emanuel Medical Center and treated for minor injuries, the CHP reported.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
