A Riverbank gas station employee was arrested for conspiracy after planning a staged robbery with an undercover Stanislaus County Sheriff’s detective.
Lester Mangan, 42, recently had been asking friends to rob the Chevron on Oakdale Road and Patterson Road while he was on duty as a clerk during the graveyard shift, according to deputy Andrew Winter of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.
Detectives caught wind of the plan and sent an undercover detective to get in on the deal with Mangan. The plan was that Mangan’s accomplice would hold a gun to his face, take the cash and the two would later split the money, Winter said.
After planning the robbery and later getting a statement from Mangan, detectives arrested him earlier this month for burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime and grand theft. He is being held on $15,000 bail.
