Catalytic converter theft again is on the rise nationally, statewide and locally, according to the Ripon Police Department. Catalytic converters are most commonly found underneath motor vehicles, attached to the exhaust system. Platinum, selling for approximately $1,700 an ounce, is a vital component of catalytic converters. Thieves usually can obtain about $40 worth of the precious metal from stolen converters. The Ripon Police Department has recorded eight reports of theft or attempted theft of catalytic converters since August. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious people or vehicles in their neighborhoods and call the police immediately. Ripon officers will be increasing neighborhood patrols to combat these thefts.
