A pickup truck with an underage driver at the wheel ran a stop sign and crashed into a sport utility vehicle Sunday morning, killing the young driver and injuring his 18-year-old passenger, Modesto police said.

The accident happened about 6:20 a.m. Police said a 15-year-old boy driving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup on Jefferson Street failed to stop at Maze Boulevard. The truck crashed into a Chevrolet Suburban, whose two occupants suffered minor injuries.

The driver who was killed lived in Modesto. Officers said his male passenger, also of Modesto, was expected to survive

Initial investigation suggests that alcohol may have been a factor in the collision, police said.

The passenger apparently was wearing a seatbelt but it has not determined if the boy died was wearing one. The boy's name had not been released because police had not yet been able to notify his family.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has further information is asked to contact the Traffic Division of the Modesto Police Department at 209-572-9500.
