Two unoccupied outbuildings or garages were consumed by a two-alarm fire this afternoon in south Modesto, authorities said.
There were no reported injuries.
The Modesto Fire Department was called to the 500 block of Hatch Road at 1:06 p.m. after a report of a fire with an explosion, according to Battalion Chief Hugo Patino.
When firefighters arrived four minutes later, they found one “outbuilding or garage” fully engulfed. Within minutes, Patino said a live power line going into the building fell to the ground.
The fire quickly spread to nearby vegetation and another outbuilding.
Both fires were contained in about 20 minutes. The Turlock Irrigation District disconnected the power line, Patino said.
Investigators believe the fire was accidentally set by transients, Patino said.
Damage to the two buildings was estimated at $40,000.
Patino said he did not know the specific contents of the buildings.
