Authorities talk man off highway overpass near Turlock

Authorities safely talked down a man who threatened to jump off a Highway 99 overpass that stalled traffic Tuesday afternoon in south Turlock.

The California Highway Patrol said the man was first spotted sitting on a railing on the overpass at Linwood Avenue.

CHP officers diverted traffic in both directions off the highway at South Golden State Boulevard and West Main Street.

CHP officials said a Turlock police negotiator talked to the man, who eventually agreed to step away from the railing to safety. He apparently was upset over the difficult economic times.

About 4:20 p.m., the man was taken into police custody.

CHP officials said the highway was being reopened.
