Modesto school neighborhoods awarded money for roads

Streets near some Modesto schools will get sidewalks, thanks to Safe Routes to Schools grants announced Monday. New curbs, gutters and sidewalks will come to parts of Sutter Avenue near Modesto High School and James Marshall Elementary School, and on Roble Avenue, Trask Lane, and Viola and Bellamy streets near El Vista Elementary and La Loma Junior High. The Sutter project features flashing beacons and a lighted crosswalk, as well as better rainwater drainage. The state will pay a combined $785,900. Ripona Elementary in Ripon also is benefiting: Idaho, Washington and Oregon streets and Milgeo, Acacia and North Stockton avenues will get $367,200 for sidewalks and drains. The California Department of Transportation on Monday awarded $24 million to 85 projects. Since 1999, the state has awarded $268 million in Safe Routes to Schools grants.
