On Saturday, authorities released the name of a 42-year-old Modesto man who died Friday morning in a five-vehicle crash on Highway 99 just south of Manteca. Antonio Cuevas was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. Cuevas was driving a 1991 Ford Explorer north on the highway and had to slam on his brakes for traffic stopped ahead of him, the CHP reported. The Ford Explorer began fishtailing into the center lanes, where the vehicle hit a 2000 Chevrolet Venture and a Dodge Charger, said CHP officer Angel Arceo. He said the Ford Explorer was then propelled back toward the slow lane, where it was broadsided by a big rig. The Ford Explorer and the big rig then slid into a Dodge Intrepid. Arceo said the four other drivers suffered minor injuries.
