TURLOCK — A 3-year-old died after her father rolled over on her as the two slept on a couch, police said.
According to Turlock Police Sgt. Nino Amirfar, a call came in at 1 a.m. Friday of a child not breathing in a home in the 800 block of Vermont Street.
“The child had fallen asleep with her father on the couch,” Amirfar said. “The mother came into the room, pulled her out and called 911.”
Police and paramedics administered CPR, but the little girl was pronounced dead. Amirfar said this morning that the incident appears to be accidental.
“We had detectives respond to the scene, and this is going to go to the coroner’s office, but there did not appear to be evidence regarding any foul play,” he said.
In any case involving harm to a child, investigators look at the situation carefully.
“We look at the condition the child’s in, any obvious signs of traumatic injury, the manner in which the child is living in the home,” Amirfar said.
Any parents found to have created an unhealthy environment, which would include the abuse of drugs and alcohol, could face charges.
That does not appear to be the case here, Amirfar said.
“The parents are responsible for a child’s welfare, but accidents happen,” he said.
He said the parents were devastated.
“We had the chaplain respond to assist,” he said.
