Modesto-area video game retailers are preparing for the launch of Activision’s new game, “Call of Duty: Black Ops” which goes on sale tonight at midnight.
“Black Ops,” the seventh game in the highly successful “Call of Duty” series, is the sequel to “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II,” which set an industry record with over $300 million of sales in the first 24 hours.
Best Buy and GameStop will be selling the game at midnight, while other retailers, like Target, are not hosting a midnight sale. Some GameStops will be hosting pre-launch parties beginning at 9 p.m.
Jose Rodriguez, 31, of Modesto, will be heading out tonight with his son, Anthony, 10.
The two preordered “Modern Warfare II,” and have done with same with “Black Ops.”
“(Anthony) looks forward to playing online and I look forward to the campaigns,” Jose Rodriguez said. “I like the storylines. They’re always good.”
“Black Ops” is expected to be one of the largest, if not the largest, video game launch in history. The entertainment retailer GameStop has received 2 million reserve orders for the game, and 500 reserve orders at their Riverbank store, according to a store employee.
Some analysts are expecting “Black Ops” to outsell “Modern Warfare II” while Activision itself is guiding slightly lower in unit sales for "Black Ops" than its predecessor.
If you haven’t reserved the game, retailers caution, there’s a very slim chance of purchasing “Black Ops” at midnight. The game retails for $59.99 and will also be available for purchase online on Steam for the same price.
