Police: High school student from Modesto shot to death in Stockton

STOCKTON — A 14-year-old Modesto girl was shot to death in southwest Stockton early Friday.

The Johansen High School freshman was in the 2700 block of Springhill Drive shortly after midnight when she and a 17-year-old boy were shot at, said Modesto police spokesman Sgt. Rick Armendariz.

The boy's injuries were not life-threatening. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she later died, said officer Pete Smith, a Stockton police spokesman.

Authorities did not release the girl's name pending family notification.

The shooting occurred in a neighborhood just north of the Van Buskirk Golf Course, west of Interstate 5.

The shooting's motive was unclear to investigators, and Smith did not provide any further details about the shooting. Police had no suspect description.

Armendariz said Modesto police are working with the Johansen High administrators to organize counseling for students returning Monday after a four-day weekend.

School was not in session Friday. Attempts by The Bee to reach Johansen High Principal Kevin Salaiz were not successful.
