City officials on Friday warned the public of a number of stolen storm drain grates in Modesto that produce risks of injury to residents.
Nearly a dozen 18-inch, round storm drain grates have been taken and subsequently replaced by city crews to eliminate the safety hazard.
Most of the grates were stolen from drains along Covena Avenue in the La Loma neighborhood and Empire Avenue in the airport neighborhood.
City officials said the thefts appear to be random acts of vandalism, but thieves might be trying to take the stolen grates to recyclers in exchange for cash.
Local recyclers have been alerted to be on the lookout for the stolen grates or any material that might be city property.
City officials asked residents to look for suspicious activity and report anyone spotted with these drain grates or other city property to Modesto police at 552-2470.
