People Magazine: Jeremy Renner may take over 'Mission: Impossible' lead

Could Modesto-born actor Jeremy Renner be taking over from Tom Cruise in the lead role in the "Mission: Impossible" movie series? People magazine speculates that may be happening.

In a story on its website Friday, the magazine said Renner was cast in "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" with the intention of possibly taking over for Cruise, who plays super spy Ethan Hunt.

"It's a franchise to potentially take over," Renner said in a recent interview with MTV News. "I can't predict the future and what they want, but that's certainly the idea."

Renner, a Beyer High School graduate, shot up to wide acclaim in Hollywood after his edgy performance in the Iraq war drama "The Hurt Locker" earned him an Academy Award nomination for best actor.
