Cars collide on Scenic Drive in Modesto, injuring two people

Two people were injured in a head-on collision on Scenic Drive, near Eastridge Drive, about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Modesto police reported.

The vehicles - a pickup truck and a Jeep SUV -- were each reportedly traveling at about 50 miles an hour when they collided, leaving both drivers pinned inside. It took about 20 minutes for emergency crews to extricate them from the wreckage. Both were taken to Modesto hospitals for treatment of major injuries.

Police Sgt. Brian Findlen said the driver of the Jeep SUV suffered injuries that were potentially life-threatening. The pickup driver was hurt, but the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Traffic along Scenic was diverted around the accident scene.

Police were investigating. Findlen said based on interviews with witnesses and evidence at the scene, it appeared the Jeep drifted across the center line and into the path of the pickup.
