Be on lookout for counterfeit bills in Tuolumne County

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department is warning consumers and business owners to be on the lookout for counterfeit $100 bills.

On Monday, deputies received a call from a business on Highway 108, which received a counterfeit $100 bill, according to Sgt. Jeff Wilson.

When deputy Lee Butler arrived, he saw that a $5 bill had been altered to look like a $100 bill. He said the alteration was not detectable without a close inspection.

Authorities are advising businesses and their employees to call the sheriff’s department at 533-5815 if they suspect they’ve received one of these bills.
