Turlock man accused of vehicular manslaughter due in court

A Turlock man accused of vehicular manslaughter is scheduled to be in Stanislaus County Superior Court today, three days after the car he was driving crashed into a tree south of Modesto, killing his passenger, authorities said.

Antonio Vitor Lourenco was driving his vehicle north on Vivian Road early Sunday morning when trying to negotiate a turn he cut the corner short, lost control and hit a tree, according to officer Chuck Leon of the California Highway Patrol.

The passenger, identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Derek Rocha, 31, of Modesto, was ejected from the car and died from his injuries, Leon said. He was not wearing a seatbelt, Leon said.

Lourenco was booked into Stanislaus County Jail on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and driving without a license.
