Modesto woman crashes SUV into farmhouse

A Modesto woman crashed her sport utility vehicle into a farmhouse moments after she caused an accident at Whitmore Avenue and Dallas Street, authorities said.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Sindi Cardenas, 21, was traveling south on Dallas and approaching a stop sign at the T-intersection when she failed to yield to traffic on Whitmore, according to Modesto police Sgt. Brian Findlen.

Her 2001 Chevy Trailblazer collided with the right front portion of a Stanislaus County-owned 1996 Oldsmobile traveling west on Whitmore, Findlen said.

The Olds driver, Richard Holl, 33, is a mechanic for the county. He had just completed maintenance on the car and was taking it for a test drive.

Immediately after the impact, Cardenas accelerated across Whitmore and into an orchard, Findlen said. Her SUV narrowly missed several trees, drove over railroad ties that bordered the home's driveway and went through the front door about 300 feet from the original accident, Findlen said.

No one was in the home in the 700 block of West Whitmore. The drivers of both vehicles had only minor injuries, Findlen said.

"The accident is still under investigation, but at this point alcohol does not appear to have played a role," Findlen said.
