Samuel Matthews: Having armed police in schools won’t protect your kids

I have a sad truth for you people upset at the deputy who did not enter the Florida school during the shooting. There may have been other officers as well who didn’t enter. I believe, from memory, that it took awhile for police to enter and confront the Pulse night club shooter as well. Here’s a fact. People armed in schools will not necessarily protect your kids. Having armed police will not guarantee your kids’ safety.

Police officers want to go home to their families, too. Not all will go barging into a gun fight without back up. Recently, police in another state were caught on camera laughing and standing by watching as three black girls drowned in a car in a pond that had led them on a high-speed chase. The truth is, that because of Supreme Court rulings like Castle Rock v. Gonzalez the police have no legal duty to protect you. You need to learn to protect yourself. This is not a knock on the police, but a wake-up call. Simply putting armed police in your schools won’t save your kids.

Samuel Matthews, Winton
