Tioga Road to be rehabilitated

Tioga Road, a popular east-west crossing in the Sierra Nevada, will soon be rehabilitated.

The National Park Service decided to restore and resurface about 41 miles of the roadway to improve safety, maintain the road and restore drainage features to control erosion, according to a news release from Yosemite National Park.

Roadside turnouts will also be redesigned to help manage roadside parking and traffic flow, according to the park. The rehabilitation will scale rock at various locations to help reduce the possibility of rock falls along Tioga Road. The parking area of Tuolumne Grove will also be improved.

Work is anticipated to start in spring 2014 and will happen in three phases as funding becomes available, according to the park. Each phase will happen over a two year period because of seasonal closures of Tioga Road.
