The state Senate has passed a bill aimed at curbing metal thefts — a rampant, costly problem in Merced.
Merced County already has an anti-metal theft ordinance, but a statewide law could help deter thieves selling purloined scrap metal within city limits. It could also help prevent thieves from stealing metal here and selling it for a quick buck in a neighboring county.
Local law enforcement officials say metal thefts have become an almost daily occurrence in Merced in recent years, and farms and ranches are common targets. The state bill heads next to the Assembly.
