A 17-year-old homicide suspect will probably spend the next 17 years of his life in prison, following an agreement his attorney reached with prosecutors this week.
Gregorio Sanchez pleaded no contest Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter charges for last year’s March 17 shooting death of Santiago Librado-Nava, 41. Librado-Nava was shot by Sanchez on the 1000 block of M Street in Merced. Sanchez also pleaded no contest to an assault with a firearm enhancement.
Investigators said the gang-related shooting was preceded by fight between two groups of men outside a residence. Merced police said Sanchez and the other members of his group were shouting gang slogans at Librado-Nava and the people he was with. Sanchez is said to be a Norteno gang member, according to Merced Police Detective Harry Markarian, who investigated the case.
Despite the gang overtones of the crime, Librado-Nava is not believed to have been a gang member, Markarian said.
