A parolee who allegedly robbed a Merced man at knife-point and later tried to extort money from him was arrested Wednesday by Merced police.
Suspect Mario Fonseca, 23, was taken into custody outside of a residence on the 2400 block of Yosemite Parkway. He was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and robbing a 31-year-old man outside of a restroom at Joe Herb Park.
Merced Police Lt. Bimley West said police were able to arrest Fonseca because the victim reported the incident after it occurred. “The victim was brave enough to come forward and give officers the information they needed to get the job done,” West said. The victim told police that he had been on his way home from work and had stopped to use the restroom. The victim told police that Fonseca grabbed him from behind and placed a knife at his throat, police said.
Fonseca then ordered the victim to an apartment on Ellen Court. Police said Fonseca forced the victim from the car and then went through his pockets, taking cash, a bank card, a cell phone and the victim’s personal identification.
