The Merced Theatre Foundation raised $26,900 in the first hour of its "Take a Seat" and "Pick a Brick" fundraisers.
The money will be used to restore the Merced Theatre at 301 W. Main St. in Downtown Merced. Organizers hope to raise $6 million to restore the theater. The City of Merced has already obtained a $1.9 million state grant, but it must be matched by outside funds, according to a city press release.
The “Take A Seat” fundraiser offers theater seats for sale, with prices ranging from $500 for the upper balcony to $1,500 for a loge seat.
The “Pick A Brick” campaign offers inscribed bricks for purchase. The bricks will be installed on Martin Luther King Jr. Way near the front door of the theater. Prices are $150 for a 4-by-8-inch brick, and $250 for an 8-by-8 brick.
